Anglo/Zulu War Memorials RequestedAMAFA/HERITAGE KZN
THE KwaZulu-Natal Heritage Council (Amafa) has appealed to
the province’s artistic community to come forward
with
ideas for two memorials of the Anglo/Zulu War.
One will commemorate the Zulu dead at Shiyane/Rorke’s
Drift. The other will mark the spot where King Cetshwayo
boarded a British vessel at Port Durnford (Esakhawini) to
go into captivity.
At Shiyane/Rorke’s Drift, the British dead are
properly
commemorated in a military cemetery. The Zulu dead are in
two mass graves.
A memorial to King Cetshwayo’s departure did exist at
Port
Durnford but has been destroyed by vandals.
Amafa/Heritage has already erected a memorial to the Zulu
dead at Isandlwana, in the form of a giant isiqu –
the
highest decoration for bravery – made in bronze. It
recently unveiled another large memorial, in bronze and
aluminium, to the early Zulu kings at eMakhosini (Valley of
the Kings).
Artists with ideas for the memorials, or who would like to
arrange site visits, should contact James van Vuuren at 035-
8702050/1/2.
“We would like an input from KwaZulu-Natal’s
artists before
we decide what would be appropriate and within our
budget,”
Mr Barry Marshall, Director of Amafa/Heritage KZN, said on
Monday. “They would probably benefit from visiting
the
localities and from looking at what we have already done at
Isandlwana and eMakhosini.
