Rifleman's Road - KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields
The first of the
Anglo-Boer conflicts in 1881 was 'a brief,
tragic little war' fought between the Transvaal and the
British. The British suffered humiliating reversals at
the
Battle of
Laing's Nek,
Schuinshoogte, and the most
humiliating of all,
Majuba. They lost 350 men, either
killed, wounded or captured. The Burghers suffered only
six
casualities.
Among the casualities were General Pomeroy-Colley. His
grave can be seen in the lonely cemetery at Mt Prospect.
'Remember Majuba' was to be a rallying cry for the next
conflict 20 years later, where Boer and British became
entangled in the most tragic of wars that was to engulf
the
whole country.
The initially victorious Boer forces swept into Natal
from
Volkrust and
Vryheid. They took
Newcastle without a shot
and forced the British to withdraw from
Dundee to
Ladysmith. Both sides ultimately became bogged
down in the
Siege of Ladysmith. Visit Fort Amiel in Newcastle and the
British camp and cemetery at Mt Prospect.
From Volkrust in the northwest, down through Newcastle,
Dundee, Ladysmith,
Colenso and
Escourt, you will encounter
magnificent scenery, generous hospitality, and tales of
great courage and endurance that will enthrall you again
and again.
